Welcome
to PHA 599: Advanced Pharmacy Practice
Experience in Critical Care
The Critical Care
Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) is an elective acute patient care
experience designed to provide the student with the opportunity to develop and
refine the skills necessary to deliver pharmaceutical care, with an emphasis on
the pharmacotherapeutic management of medication therapy in the critically ill.
The goal of this APPE is to expose students to the care of critically ill
patients in the intensive care unit setting. Students will work under the
direct oversight and supervision of the preceptor as part of the
interdisciplinary critical care team. They will work collaboratively with other
providers in the intensive care unit to foster interprofessional care and
learning. During the experience students may also have the opportunity to assist
in the development of policies, procedures and protocols regarding medication
therapy in the intensive care unit. They may also have the opportunity to
participate in research in various capacities. Interaction and communication
with patients, their families and other health care providers for the promotion
of optimal drug therapy are stressed to help the student develop a sound
professional approach to the practice of pharmacy. In addition, students are
encouraged to broaden their existing competencies and incorporate their
professional and personal goals into this clerkship.
New Students…
You should
review the learning contract
prior to beginning the clerkship. You will be required to sign a copy of this
contract on the first day of your clerkship. You should also begin to review
the clerkship
calendar, along with the various assignment guidelines and grading forms. Be sure to review the clerkship
calendar regularly throughout the rotation, as necessary updates
will be made as needed. As you complete the clerkship, other useful information can be accessed from this website
that should also assist you.
The location
and directions to the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital can be found here.
On your first
day, meet me in the Clinical Services office of the Pharmacy Department at the
time indicated in the clerkship
calendar. I suggest you park in the parking garage located to the
left of the hospital as you face the front main entrance to the hospital. As a
student, you should get free parking in this garage with your hospital ID
badge. Do not park in the parking garage near the Emergency Department attached
to the hospital by the pedestrian bridge (you will not be able to park for free
there). From inside the parking garage, use the stairwell or elevators on the
south end (the side where you entered the garage) to enter the hospital on the
P6, Red, level. I or someone else will meet you in the main hallway near the
coffee stand on this level. Bring your lab coat, a scientific calculator, and
any other supplies and resources you believe may be necessary.
