A total of 18 scattering votes were reported, six from Washington, two each from Adams, Huntingdon, and the Centre/Clearfield/McKean grouping, and six not specified as to county.
Militia forces and volunteers mobilized for the War of 1812 were housed in camps in the counties noted. The manner of tabulation of military votes appears to have varied according to county, some being merged into the county totals, others being reported separately from the civilian vote. The military vote was strongly Republican and was sufficient to swing Philadelphia and Montgomery counties fromthe Federalist to the Republican column. It is possible, but by no means certain, that this was also true of Berks and Bucks counties where the Republicans were significantly stronger among the civilian population.
